A lot of the Nanao villagers had ben in the merchant navy and due to mistrust with Chinese banks kept their money in Hong Kong. [48] This accounted for their liking of the British and the hospitality afforded the escapees.

 

 

 

There was somewhere in the region of a hundred guerrilla's with woman, children, and dogs. They were utterly silent while escorting the escape party through the Japanese lines. [48]

Leung had served in the Chinese navy under Admiral Chan;he was an independent guerrilla chief regarded by the Comunists as a bandit, and the Admiral was able to enlist his aid in conducting them into Free china as far as Kukong by personally vouching for him with the Nationalists.
